We previously posted that ICE would become active again soon, after it ended the hold on I-9 audit responses that had been in place due to COVID until August 19. This week, ICE updated its website to confirm it would be resuming more on-site investigations and enforcement actions and that it was confident its officers would be able to do so while maintaining safety measures.
So far, ICE is focusing on locating and arresting “at-large” individuals it has identified as removable from the U.S. Of course at some point, ICE will start visiting worksites again for I-9 and employment verification investigations. Take this time now to review and correct your I-9 records, put written policies and procedures in place, and train staff responsible for I-9 completion. Don’t wait until the ICE officer shows up at your door and gives you just 3 days to respond!
You can download a free I-9 Audit Toolkit here to get started, and of course reach out to us if you would like us to walk you through the process and prepare you to respond to ICE with confidence.
